Costa Del Jive Dance Competition
Competition Categories and Rules
Both male and female dancers will have to register 3 days prior to competition for all categories where you will allocated you individual number
All numbers to then be worn during the competition
Numbers are person specific and not transferable . (coz you will confuse lynn on admin)
Please keep hold of them as there aren’t any spares.
(Unless 100 euros is paid slight of hand)
Dance with a Stranger
This category is only open to dancers who have paid for and are fully booked on the Costa Del Jive 16
Medals will be awarded for Gold 1st, Silver 2nd, and Bronze 3rd positions
This is to show the fun and highlight the social dancing skills of the dance partners.
This must have 70 per cent recognized modern jive dance moves
This is a freestyle dance with one lead and one follow which must be demonstrated. Smiling whilst dancing is compulsory.
Singing whilst dancing will not gain extra points but may lose some if out of tune :)
Judges will be looking for the connection and flow between dancers
Male dancers will register before the competition and be allocated a number which will be worn during the competition.( on back, thigh or bottom)
At the beginning of this category, partners will be selected in a random way ensuring that dancers are not with their regular partner.
Their partners will not be known until the minutes before the start of the competition. It may be someone you know but not a regular partner….it could be a total stranger …..but you should have met them by now on “happy hour”
Both lead and follow must stay as a couple through all rounds in this category.
Swapping partners will lead to you being put in stocks and subject to having wet sponges thrown at you.
Due to proximity of dancers airlifts are not allowed in this category.
The number of rounds will depend on how many couples will start initially.
The final will be whittled down to 5 couples for a dance off
Underhand tactics like pulling of hair and gouging eyes will not be allowed until the end of the days competition.
In the latter rounds judges will score dancers independently to ensure a fair result for all.
Any person who causes dissent will have to perform Gangham Style alone on the stage on Gala night
Double Trouble
This is open to all dancers ( except instructors or dance crew).
Medals will be awarded for Gold 1st, Silver 2nd, and Bronze 3rd positions as well as a Golden ticket prize ( to be revealed) for each of the winners
Each team will complete a series DT dance moves throughout the dance track selected.
(You will know the dance tracks before the competition and have chance to practice any of the moves during pre competition dance sessions as well as the freestyles leading up to the friday competition.).
There will be 2 Double Trouble dance classes prior to the competition for dedicated teams.
Dancers not entering the competition are still welcome to join in the classes subject to the availability of spare ladies or gents.
The main thing is to have fun, enjoy and if it goes wrong…….. laugh………….. we will expect a lot of laughing
Judges will be looking at Style and positioning and spacing of follows and co-ordination by the leads,- lead maintaining a flowing dance ....
and how many cock ups happen but more so how you recover….. that's the fun bit.
You may be scored extra accordingly.
It is emphasised that if a move goes wrong dancers can repeat it again any time during the dance track...

Dance moves can include :-
1.Sway /linked walk around
2.Mixer
3.Crab
4.Lady spin/free walk around
5,Forward strut
6.Double Yo Yo
7.Double sway into double shoulder sway
8. Columbian into scorpion
9 Double Pretzel
10, Back and forth
or any you design yourself in your trio.
(Many of these moves plus more will be taught in lessons)
The competition may be run over two tracks depending on number of entrants. (It was mega last time)
Silver Seniors Open
This category is open to dancers where one of the couple dancing is 65 years or over.
Their partner must be at least 60 years or over.
We will be relying on your honesty in this category or Sheila will grab your passports
Again dances would include a minimum of 70% is to be recognisable as modern jive. (Line dancing will not be classed as modern jive on this occasion
(Lifts and aerials will be allowed in this category subject to a doctors consent and have adequate insurance and current E111 card)
This is subject to number of entrants for floor safety and will be determined beforehand .
Medals will be awarded for Gold 1st Silver 2nd and Bronze 3rd positions
Costa Dance Stars
This category is open to all dancers and will win the coveted Costa Del Jive GIANT trophy plus the golden ticket prize to be revealed.
Medals will be awarded for Gold 1st Silver 2nd and Bronze 3rd positions
This category is for the best of modern jive dancers or open to those who wish to have a go and enjoy the fun.
You can dance with your regular partner
Couples will dance to music selected by the organiser.
( it could even be any genre if Big Als on the decks)
Dancers can do up to 2 Airsteps per track but this does not mean you will be marked higher than someone who does not do them
during their routine.
Again dances would include a minimum of 70% is to be recognizable as modern jive. (Line dancing will not be classed as modern jive on this occasion)
Judges will be looking to the connection between dancers, the flow and interpretation of the music, (anyone dancing out of step to the music will have to do an encore at the end..)
The number or rounds in this category will depend on the number of entrants
